Remember back when they released the E-Class and they talked about the E43 wagon and how it wasn’t going to come to the United States. WELL. I went to the Mercedes website and lo and behold the E43 is on the US website ready to be built. Maybe they just meant the wagon, but the sedan is definitely coming. AT $74,000 BASE.
I remember thinking about how I thought that Mercedes was trying to make the most money by keeping E63 buyers buying E63s instead of getting E43s. (Don’t know how that mental process works but yeah.) Instead they’re just trying to literally make ALL the money they can.

With all the necessary options (metallic paint, pano roof, 20in wheels, acoustic pack, premium pack 3, rear sunshades) it comes out to $84k. That’s pretty ridiculous for only a sub-400-hp V6, even with an AMG badge on it. (And that’s supposing that the AMG badge actually means anything in terms of dynamics on this car.) Aims it squarely at the Maserati Ghibli in terms of price/engine/power though.
BMW doesn’t have the configurator up for the new 5er, but for the last generation you could easily get a 450 hp turbo V8 550i M-sport loaded up for $84k. It’s also easy to find a Lexus GS-F at or even under that price right now. The Audi S6, which in truth is due for replacement, also undercuts this Merc in terms of base price and options cost. That has a TT V8 with 450 hp and AWD and better performance.
Additionally, the new 540i coming out, with the new BMW TT I6, supposedly only has 335 hp but is only a little slower in acceleration than this 395 hp Merc.
As for the E63, that will probably have a base price between $100k and $110k. I mean, the old E63 S wagon started at $104k. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the new once reach $130k with all the options. Just look at the RS7, M5, or the especially expensive M6 Gran Coupe and you’ll see how ridiculous the prices in this segment have gotten.

Prices are inflating again, even with a strong dollar. Feels like the late 80s. Carmakers are getting what they can out of the new Belle Epoque.
My local dealer has a C43 in stock with a sticker of nearly 69K.
